Gurugram: ‘Local focus, faster execution are what new sectors need’

Gurugram is a city of ambition, of opportunity and of the future for many who are now its residents.

Gurugram has seen multiple governments, politicians and agencies making various promises to its residents and the city has made progress on many fronts, but has also lagged on the speed of execution.

With the formation of the new corporation and the extension of the MCG’s areas, there is hope that this change is for the better will lead to faster execution of projects.

This will also bring zone specific focus, operational efficiencies and execution. By operational efficiencies, I mean that each MCG zone should have localised improvement goals and priority plans for infrastructure development and maintenance.

So, specific budgetary allocation against these planned tasks can be easily managed. This, in turn, can bring better governance on what can be done or delivered by when and internally, the MCG staff will also be aligned on what priorities they are chasing.

The outcome of such operational efficiencies will be better speed, fit for purpose and quality of execution.
As a resident of a new sector, my expectations from MCG are basic:

* Build and manage the foundational infrastructure for these sectors such as the drainage system for roadside stormwater management (this is missing in large parts of the new sectors).

* Build and manage service roads, green areas and the footpaths according to designs approved by the authority

* Curtail/reduce pollution by having clear and enforceable dos and don’ts, rather than NGT telling them what to do

* Communicate with residents regularly on what the MCG is planning and how the execution is progressing.

As this builds trust and transparency, residents will be able to provide feedback on the next set of priorities and quality of execution of work Build and maintain elements in infrastructure that helps in improving public safety and removing encroachment of public spaces.

In my view, if MCG has its focus on fewer issues that deal with basics, they will not stretch it too thin on resources and the execution, too, can be faster. This, in turn, boosts the positivity in the minds of everyone.

Once basic infrastructure is in place for these sectors, MCG can build the next level of social infrastructure and make these new sectors what people have dreamt of. I’m positive that with the efforts of the MCG and residents, Gurugram’s new sectors will become a reference point of good governance and city of the future.
