News: EOW to probe MCG’s street vending case-25-08-2021
Gurgaon: The street vending case of the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) has been transferred to the Economic Offence Wing (EOW), an official said. An FIR was registered on August 19 against four companies for causing financial loss of Rs 7 crore to the civic body.
“After completion of investigation, the case file be returned back to the concerned DCP and concerned police station through this office,” read the order issued by KK Rao, police commissioner, Gurgaon.
The corporation conducted an inquiry after councillors flagged the irregularities in the street vending project in a House meeting held in October last year.
It was found that while one agency didn’t even start work on the project, violating the terms of its contract, the three other companies have been taking monthly charges of Rs 1,500 from each authorised street vendor for five years but haven’t deposited MCG’s share of Rs 500 from every cart.
The MCG officials said that the firms were hired for rehabilitation, regulation and management of street vending zones. Out of Rs 1,500 taken monthly from each cart, the companies were to get Rs 1,000 to provide services like sanitation, hygiene, security, police verification, insurance of the vendors and CCTV camera installation.
After conducting the inquiry, the civic body filed a complaint against the four companies on August 14, following which an FIR was registered at the City police station.
