“We have identified around 1,000 buildings in four zones of the city. It is a dynamic process and the survey will continue. Action will be taken as per the provisions of the Haryana Municipal Corporation Act,” MCG commissioner Mukesh Kumar Ahuja told TOI. “I have directed officials to track unauthorised construction in each zone. As more such buildings are identified, the civic body will update the list and take action accordingly,” he added. Of the 1,000 unauthorised buildings, nearly 400 are in zone-3 alone and 97 are in zone-4, according to MCG officials. “The buildings identified are five- to even seven storey buildings. As of now, only four storeys are allowed. These unauthorised structures put the lives of the residents at risk,” an official said.
“A meeting was held after the Chintels Paradiso collapse, in which it was discussed that the structurally weak buildings should be identified,” the official said. In a report submitted to the Haryana Human Rights Commission on January 5, the MCG said that 80 buildings have been declared ‘unsafe’ for living. In fact, a private firm during the property tax assessment survey had identified 183 ‘unsafe’ buildings. However, the executive engineers found 80 of them ‘unsafe’.
